MEMBER SPOTLIGHTIn the seventeenth installment of our "Member Spotlight", we're featuring one of the hardest working individuals that I've had the pleasure of meeting. In addition to working and being a full-time student, she still makes time to get swole at the SHOP every day. Her commitment and dedication are inspiring to me and everyone else around her. Introducing...

Liv Hein

First, give us a little background on yourself.I am a born and raised Oregonian and have always loved fitness and sports. My life has revolved around sports basically since the first grade, starting with soccer and softball. Throughout school I was a tri-sport athlete running cross country, playing basketball and softball. Unfortunately, I quit after I graduated and wish I wouldn’t have. I am currently a senior at OSU and will receive my undergraduate degree in Psychology, and then will continue on to grad school for either Institutional Organizational Psych, teaching or social work (or.. Knowing me.. Something completely different). I enjoy backpacking, fishing, snowboarding, wakeboarding, yoga and various other activities. I also have a creative side that I like to express through painting, ceramics, and drawing.

What got you started and how long have you been at the SHOP?I had always been interested in CrossFit because other gyms are sometimes overwhelming to me. I always had coaches, while growing up, giving me workouts to do during the off seasons and I like the structure that they gave. I could do a written down workout and not think about it. After high school, it was hard for me to stay motivated and I got bored creating my own workouts, and not to mention that Dixon Rec Center at OSU is a madhouse. I started playing slow pitch softball with my sister a few summers ago and I met Teena and Terra (the littles), on my new team. I got to know them pretty quickly and grasped onto their positive energy. They had just started CrossFit at the shop, and I had just bought some kettlebells to mix them into my own workouts. In December of last year, I started looking into CrossFit but didn’t know which gym to choose. My sister goes to a different CrossFit gym, so I tried hers first and it was eh..., but Terra had invited me to try The SHOP, and from the first day, I was hooked. Drew’s and Cody’s customer service was fantastic and they made me feel really comfortable from the beginning. The community that The SHOP has to offer is one of the best aspects of it all. I love getting to know other members and the feeling seems mutual among others. I have been attending the noon class mostly over the past three months. We have a pretty solid group of nooners and I look forward to hanging out and getting our swole on every day. Oh and of course giving Drew a hard time (he’s very sensitive hahaha). With what movement(s) have you seen the most progress?Pullups and chinups! Also Turkish getups. I had a real Swolvember last month and hit some PR’s in all three of those exercises. What do you like to do outside the gym?I am a fulltime student and work part-time, and there aren't enough hours in the day. When I’m able to, I love to hang out with friends, not do math, go on hikes around Corvallis, travel, camp, snowboard, spend time with my niece and nephews and cuddle my cat Bonzai and any other animal that I can find.[caption id="attachment_208086" align="aligncenter" width="600"]

Liv obviously had a head-start[/caption]What movement(s) would you like to improve on in the next few months?I really want to get my pullups to be more strict, and do more in a row. I’ve been doing some accessory work to start some building blocks for muscle-ups which I hope to achieve when I get the strength. I love power cleans and would like to keep adding plates to my bar on that lift, as well as back squat (it’s like a mile to get down to 90 degrees with my long legs, I know Drew understands, him being so tall and stuff) so it’s never been my best lift. Favorite place to eat in/near Corvallis?Taco Vino (even though I work there, I’m still not tired of it)! Also Brick and mortar in Albany... Their brunch is amazing (and they have a bloody mary bar to build your own!).What advice would you give members just starting out at the SHOP?I would say, consistency is key, I had a lull this summer and was not consistent with my attendance, but this fall I really started to get after it. I have seen a lot of results really quickly, not only in strength but in technical movements as well, like double unders.
